Vilnius, Lithuania - Guide

General Information  /  Arriving & Getting Around

Vilnius - General Information

Located in south eastern Lithuania, at the confluence of the Vilnia and Neris Rivers, Vilnius is destined to be European Capital of Culture in 2009. In the past, it has survived occupation by Imperial Russia, Poland, the Nazis and the Soviet Union. Today, it is a city undergoing huge changes, which lend it a vibrant, ‘happening’ atmosphere. More and more glass skyscrapers are springing up in the business and administrative district of the New City Centre, on the north side of the river, while brand names such as Gucci, Armani and Chanel are appearing on the high streets. In spite of this, the city retains the traditional charm of its Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage site), in which a mixture of late-Gothic, Romanesque and Baroque architecture still survives. Particular highlights include Gediminas Castle (peerless city views can be enjoyed from its red brick tower) and the Archcathedral Basilica, with its beautiful baroque chapel of St. Casimir.
